Brief: Create a concertina that encapsulates the atmosphere of ‘Tracking The Rain’ a poem by Margaret Atwood. This evokes a sense of dystopian urgency and atmosphere reflecting the climate change construct of the poem. Each element contributes to a narrative of looming uncertainty and disquiet.
Concept: The design development process began by digesting the meaning of each line and drawing visual annotations of each word and its meaning. With this exercise, I was able to sift any visual images that the poem was alluding to as well as gain a comprehensive understanding. The secondary part of the design development process is highlighting and isolating the lines that form the most visual meaning. The final stage, illustrated on the right, is a set of sketches of initial concepts for the eight-page concertina.
The iteration process highlights various ways typography has been manipulated both digitally and physically through mark making, cuts, scans, folds and even layering sticky tape.
