Making Images Chinese Zodiac Collages

Collage exercises

We were given the brief to design a set of collages based on the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. To start, we did exercises that would begin to make us understand the medium of collage and how we could utilise different materials in our designs. I decided to follow a graphic style that was abstract while still reading as a cartoon-like design of each animal, using round eyes and soft curved shapes.

I used different materials and techniques including ripped and cut paper, magazines and egg cartons. I still needed to develop these designs so that they were more materially consistent and working more as a set. I achieved this by changing some of the materials used such as the rooster head and the background of the mouse. This made for a more simplified graphic set that was more consistent and therefore easier to read.
