PROJECT 4: Experimental Type

A series of experimentation of handmade type manipulation using materials such as cellophane, acetate, mirrors, and sunset lamps.

Brief: Explore analogue techniques of distorting and adding visual effects and textures to type.

These experiments were something entirely new to me. I had experimented with text on scanners, but I hand never thought about other ways to manipulate the text by hand. I had a lot of fun experimenting with different ways to manipulate the text using light reflection and different coloured materials. There was definitely a lot of trial and error but that became part of the fun as it actually led to some of my favourite experiments, such as the text reflected onto the wall with the purple light. I also had a lot of fun playing with water to create different effects similar to what I had previously done with the scanner. Overall, hand manipulated type is something I’m keen to keep experimenting with in future projects and I really like the results I got.
