Project 02 involved creating a visual narrative about the importance of Victoria Park as a Place.
My visual narrative explores the need for quality time for relationships to survive in Victoria Park. I have utilised my personal experience in the present and the Indigenous experience in the past. This is to reinforce relationships in the Park. Through digital illustration and handwritten text, I desire to engage audiences with the serenity and emotions within relationships.
After brainstorming three topics/themes surrounding Victoria Park, I chose the idea that quality time spent in relationships provides a sense of belonging. This is because I could explore my story within the present and past of Victoria Park and relate it to my personal experience of belonging. Thus, my visual narrative will investigate the emotions established within relationships.
I devised a script before thumbnailing my comic to know the words to match the visual imagery depicted. I settled with these thumbnails because I felt the visual imagery and text made the story cohesive.
I produced two drafts before settling on the final outcome (seen above). The first draft was depicted using Copic fine liners and Copic Markers. However, I switched mediums from traditional to digital art because I was more confident in my skills in digital art. My second draft resembles the majority of my final outcome. However, for the outcome, I added more decorative elements, such as my fountain pen calligraphy and patterns, as suggested by my tutor.
I experimented with Copic fine liners, Copic markers, and Prismacolors. Initially, I wanted to utilise Copics as the medium for my comic, but I changed to digital because I was more confident in digital. I also experimented with calligraphy pens and calligraphy. I used my calligraphy experiments with the fountain pen in my outcome to provide a sense of tactility.
For my practice research, I went to Victoria Park to draw objects, flora and fauna in Victoria Park to reflect on my experience with the Park. Additionally, I took some photos and created colour palettes I may use in my comic.
